Post-Anime Club: Jigoku & Blind Beast

Carlo and Jenna go to HELL in the latest episode of Post-Anime Club with a double feature of two horror films from 1960s Japan. In Jigoku (1960) it's literally, a movie about a man for whom a series of unfortunate events so consumes his life he ends up in a technicolor hell of fire, torture and moaning after he dies. In Blind Beast (1969) the hell is more manmade – a model is kidnapped by a psychotic blind man who enslaves her in a windowless warehouse full of disembodied limbs he has sculpted out of clay. She resists at first, as one might, but eventually decides to embrace her new lifestyle and descends into an increasingly violent world of sex-based madness.

Both of these now well regarded films involve some questionable content – big rape trigger warning for the second – and yet scratch a visual itch for Carlo and Jenna as far as "what the fuck? well I guess" aesthetics are concerned.

A new episode of Notes From the Back Row will be released every other week. If you have a new movie premiering, drop us a line – we might be interested in setting something up with you too!
